Glutathione: A New Private Label Opportunity

As far as supplements for healthy and active Americans go, antioxidants are some of the most popular purchases. In a typical year, Americans spend more than $2 billion on antioxidants alone. How did antioxidants become such a wildly popular supplement for so many people?

It has to do with these little, unruly things called free radicals. They’re an unstable form of oxygen molecules that lack an electron, making them “highly reactive chemicals that have the potential to harm cells,” according to the US government’s National Cancer Institute. They occur naturally in the environment, including in the human body where they help fight infections, but excess levels of free radicals can lead to cell damage. Especially today, when exposure to cigarette smoke, pollution, pesticides, and radiation is raising free radical levels to a dangerous level, people need to help their bodies manage the chemical chaos.

The most effective way to battle free radical damage is to boost antioxidant levels in the body. Antioxidants bind with free radicals, in effect neutralizing them and preventing cell damage. The millions of people who take antioxidants often do so in hopes of reducing the risk of cancer and slowing down the aging process. Antioxidants are a giant in the world of private label supplements, but there’s one long-neglected supplement in particular, which is finally getting recognized as a great source of antioxidants –Glutathione.

“The Mother of Antioxidants”

Private Label Glutathione products can be very beneficial for everyone, since Glutathione is depleted from our bodies as we age.

Glutathione is relatively unknown, but it’s found in its natural form throughout the world. The human body produces it, although environmental factors and things like poor diet and lack of exercise can deplete the body’s natural supply. It’s also produced by countless plants and even bacteria, to keep regular life functions regulated. Glutathione supplements come from non-animal sources, mainly fruits and nuts, including avocados.

Despite the fact that Glutathione is a crucial part of keeping a body healthy, most people don’t know that their body needs it. In his column on The Huffington Post, Dr. Mark Hyman explains that Glutathione is “the most important molecule you need to stay healthy and prevent disease — yet you’ve probably never heard of it.” Research backs up what Dr. Hyman has to say about the unfortunate obscurity of Glutathione. A study in a recent issue of Natural Products Insider found that only 6 percent of consumers have heard of the supplement. For a substance that Dr. Hyman calls “the mother of antioxidants,” this is a surprisingly small percentage — but awareness is growing.

Glutathione: Into the Spotlight

1024px-Glutathione-from-xtal-3D-ballsEven though Glutathione has had a small profile for such a powerful antioxidant, it might finally be getting its moment in the spotlight. In addition to evangelists like Dr. Hyman singing its praises, the all-Glutathione issue of Natural Products Insider heralds a new level of popularity. Customers are becoming aware of what Glutathione is and what kind of benefits it can bring. Private label supplement businesses should plan for the upcoming rise in demand, and get ahead of the trend.

It’s not only growing customer awareness that’s making this a great time to plan on stocking up on and promoting Glutathione. As Glutathione sales and awareness are on the rise you may also start to see a slight drop in raw material prices; although, be prepared to pay a premium for this coveted material, just like you pay more for an avocado than you do for an orange. This means that while it may not have the name recognition of Vitamin E or absorbic acid, there is a rare combination of customer awareness and market forces that makes this Glutathione’s moment.

For private label supplement retailers, Glutathione represents a spectacular growth opportunity. The antioxidant can be taken for numerous purposes. Customers may select it to alleviate the conditions of aging (which include treating or preventing Alheimer’s, memory loss, and arthritis), to prevent damage from city pollution, or as part of an antioxidant-rich skincare treatment. It can be used both by itself, with Glutathione 500 mg capsules, and in combination with other antioxidants, like in our Ultra Antioxidant formula. It can also be used as part of an antioxidant-rich skincare line, which can include our Glutathione Micro-Scrub.
