How to Create an Amazing Logo for Your Supplement Brand

Let’s try something today. Close your eyes. Think of the following corporations: Apple, McDonald’s, Nike, Target. What did you picture? Maybe some of you thought of their associated products. Perhaps a few readers imagined the brick and mortar stores for the brand. However, I’m betting you pictured each company’s logo.

Logos are an essential element of any brand. Your company’s logo will function as shorthand for your company itself. A logo grabs the attention of potential Consumers. Logos can be a picture, a title, or a combination of both. Clients who would like to design their own logos should follow the following tips.

Design

The logo itself should be simple, memorable, timeless, versatile, and appropriate. A logo that is simple is easier to remember and cheaper to print. You want your logo to stand out among the hordes of other supplement purveyors, one your Consumers will remember and seek. A logo should be classic but not stodgy–in a word, evergreen. Versatility is essential once you consider all the ways you will use your logo: not only will it be emblazoned on your product labels and on your promotional merchandise, you will use a smaller version as an icon for any social media profiles. Therefore you need a logo that can be compressed, magnified, and simplified. Finally, you need to be sure that your logo matches the personality of your brand: a brand that wants to be seen as heartwarming should not have a logo that evokes raw energy.

Color

Your logo should contain no more than two or three colors. The logic behind this is twofold. First, simplicity is key to a good logo. Second, more colors in a logo can mean higher printing costs. What emotion does your brand strive to evoke? Humans react to colors on an emotional level: blue connotes reliability, red signifies energy, green conveys growth, and so forth. Make sure that the colors you choose evokes the emotion you want. After you’ve chosen your colors and applied them to the logo design, consider how your logo would look without colors. Is your logo still identifiable in black and white? How about in grayscale? You must consider also how the colors in your logo will work with other branding elements such as your company website, product labels, and advertising materials.

Font

Your logo will probably contain your company name. When enlarged, you should consider including a tagline with your logo. A tagline is a brief (three or four words maximum) slogan or catchphrase for your company. Whether or not you include a tagline, this is the most important font-related question to ask yourself: is it legible? You want your logo to have an interesting font, but potential Consumers will have a hard time associating your brand with your logo if they cannot read the company name or tagline. While often derived, fonts like Comic Sans and Papyrus are popular because they are highly readable. This is not to say that you are limited to sans-serif, block letters. You can use whatever typeface you want as long as a reader can clearly make out words. As with color, you must consider if your font matches the tone of your brand. A supplement brand that prides itself on cutting-edge ingredients should not use a font that looks whimsical.

Perhaps the most important thing to remember about your logo creation is this advice: Do not rush. Your logo is an integral part of your branding. Take your time designing and refining your logo. Make sure that it perfectly suits your brand and that you love it (of course, the former is much more important than the latter). While it may evolve over time (e.g., Visa or NBC), it will stay essentially the same. Some marketers refer to changing one’s logo as a “cardinal sin” of marketing. Drastically changing your logo will damage your brand. After all, a logo is meant for brand recognition.
